Could the DFB-Pokal exit help RB Leipzig in the title race?

After being crowned back-to-back DFB-Pokal champions, RB Leipzig failed to defend their trophy away at Wolfsburg on Tuesday evening. A 1-0 defeat away at the Volkswagen Arena ended Leipizg’s 13-game winning streak in the competition.

However, while this will undoubtedly be frustrating to those associated with the club, head coach Marco Rose would reflect fondly after the game: “A great journey has come to an end for us. We recently had great experiences in the DFB Cup, winning the title twice. Unfortunately, that won’t be the case this year.”

It could also be a blessing in disguise for Leipzig, who will look to compete for Bundesliga and Champions League glory. Having already shown how fatigue can catch up on them this season after a disappointing 0-0 draw at home to Bochum on matchday six, Rose may view the exit as one less distraction for his side.

The 47-year-old would add after the game: “It really hurts that we’re out. The boys are disappointed, but we don’t have much time to think about it because we have to get points again in the Bundesliga. And play the Champions League in Belgrade on Tuesday. For me, I’ll be moving forward with full energy tomorrow.”

With the Champions League in mind, Leipzig will know that three points in Belgrade will all but qualify them for the knockout stages. An upsetting night in Lower Saxony may not be the disaster it first appeared come May.
