Archer netted seven times in 20 Championship appearances for the Midlands club last time out and his brother recently spoke to the Lancashire Evening Post about how the young forward would love a Preston North End return.

However, sharing his thoughts on the young striker amidst Sunderland’s reported interest, Carlton Palmer told Football League World: “They won’t sell him, they’ll let him go out on loan. He’s highly rated at Aston Villa. He’s a very, very good young player but he’s not getting any game time. He’s not getting any minutes.

“Even before Steven Gerrard got the sack, I think it was universally understood that during the second part of the season, he would go out on loan.

“So, whoever manages to secure his services, they’ve got a very, very good player.

“So yes, I think it could be a good fit for all parties.

The verdict

Archer is a very exciting forward and someone who has an incredibly high ceiling when it comes to future development.

The 20-year-old seamlessly adapted to the Championship last time out and could make just as big of an impact if tasked with a temporary stint in the second tier again.

When considering the progress of young players at Sunderland in recent times, that makes the Wearside club an attractive prospect for Villa.

Archer provides something completely different to the strikers Mowbray currently possesses at his disposal, which can only act as a good thing for all involved.
