Behind-the-scenes efforts to bring Pablo Vegetti to Corinthians have come to light, with Emiliano Díaz—assistant and son of former head coach Ramón Díaz—confirming club interest in the prolific Vasco striker. Speaking on the Charla Podcast, Emiliano revealed he personally reached out to Vegetti during their stint at Corinthians, aiming to persuade the Argentine forward to swap Rio for São Paulo.
Despite the overture, Vegetti reportedly made it clear he was not interested in leaving Vasco. According to Emiliano, Vegetti’s commitment to his current club and his well-established role within the squad were decisive factors. “He told me it would be difficult, that he’s happy at Vasco, that his family is settled, and he really enjoys being there. He’s the captain, very connected to the club,” Emiliano explained. Even with a suggestion to join, Vegetti declined, particularly citing the stiff competition for starting spots at Corinthians. With Yuri Alberto and Memphis in the squad, the forward said he was unsure how much game time he would realistically get.
Vegetti has become a crucial figure for Vasco since joining in 2023. Over 105 appearances, he’s found the net 51 times and set up another six goals. His current season is even more impressive, with 18 strikes in 30 matches, underlining both his consistency and value as a leader.
Emiliano Díaz admitted he pushed hard to bring Vegetti in, recognizing his impact at Vasco, but acknowledged that club loyalty stood in the way. “I wanted to bring him, but Vasco was never going to let him go—and he didn’t want to leave,” he said. Conscious of the realities facing incoming players at big clubs, Vegetti also weighed the internal competition. “He said, ‘There’s Yuri, there’s Memphis. I don’t know if I’ll play,’” Emiliano added.
The attempted move speaks to Corinthians’ ongoing search for attacking solutions—even as the club, under the Díaz regime, pursued experienced names to balance their existing options. In the end, Vegetti's decision reflects how player loyalty and the question of playing time continue to shape transfer market outcomes, even when top Brazilian clubs come calling.
