Beautiful goals from Rodriguinho Marinho and Ăngel Romero won the match 2-0 for Corinthians, taking them closer to Copa Libertadores qualification.
In their return to league play after the World Cup break, Timão gave their supporters in the Itaquera district of São Paulo something to cheer about. Beyond the spectacular goals from Rodriguinho and Romero, the team got an inspired performance by goalkeeper Cåssio.
Just three minutes into the match, Rodriguinho unleashed a strike from the edge of the box. The effort beat Jefferson into the corner of Botafogoâs net to open the scoring for Corinthians.
Botafogo mustered a response in the 11th minute but Igor Rabello headed over the crossbar. After the quick Corinthians goal, the contest settled into a midfield slog with neither team creating much.
The visitors pressed the issue more in the second half. Botafogo fired off 24 total shots, eight of which were on frame, but they couldnât not force a break-through. Rodrigo PimpĂŁo forced CĂĄssio into a quality save nine minutes into the second half.
Romero beat Botafogoâs goalkeeper in the 76th minute to double the home sideâs lead. With the two-goal lead, CĂĄssio was again called into action after full-back Gilson hit a strong shot from distance.
The result puts Corinthians on 19 points and move the team into seventh place. Botafogo, on the other hand remain on 17 points.
