The all-Barclays Women’s Super League clash was one of the outstanding ties to come out of the draw with Brian Sørensen’s new-look Everton side able to test themselves against the highest-ranked side from last season in the group stage.
Manchester United and Everton join Aston Villa, Sheffield United and Durham in Group A while the remaining northern sides – Leicester City, Sunderland, Liverpool and Blackburn Rovers have been placed in Group B. Group C looks to be the most competitive of the five groups with top tier sides Brighton & Hove Albion and West Ham United battling it out with second tier clubs Birmingham City and London City Lionesses while Group D is an all-Barclays Women’s Championship affair which is made up of Bristol City, Charlton Athletic, Lewes and Crystal Palace. Finally, Group E will see newly-promoted second tier club Southampton come up against Reading, Tottenham Hotspur and Coventry United.
In a move which mirrors what happened in the competition in 2021/2022, Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea have been given byes to the quarter-final stage of the competition which is expected to take place in early 2023. It should be noted that if Arsenal or Manchester City exit the UEFA Women’s Champions League in Round 1 or 2, they will enter the FA Women’s Continental League Cup at the Group Stage and will be drawn in an existing group of four clubs in the appropriate geographical grouping.
Full fixture dates and ticket details for all of the group stage matches will be revealed in due course.
Manchester City are the current holders of the FA Women’s Continental League Cup after they came from behind to defeat Chelsea 3-1 in last season’s final at AFC Wimbledon’s Cherry Red Records Stadium.
