Arsenal have entered the race to sign Paris Saint-Germain winger Xavi Simons in recent days, according to Spanish publication Sport.

The Netherlands international has had an impressive loan season with RB Leipzig where he has registered nine goals and 15 assists from 42 outings.

It was recently said that he could leave on another loan stint but Sport (page 2) claim that Les Parisiens will only entertain a permanent transfer.

This has made it ‘very difficult’ for the Blaugrana and manager Xavi Hernandez. While Simons is open to a reunion, PSG won’t sanction a temporary deal.

The same publication report that Arsenal and Bayern have ‘asked about’ the player and could go head-to-head to secure his services during the summer.

Simons currently has a market value of €80 million, but PSG are aware that they can’t demand the same. They are eyeing at least €60m with incentives.

Luis Enrique’s side are in a hurry to close the operation and favour an early transfer deal before Euro 2024, provided the player gives the green light.

Arsenal could find it difficult to sign Simons

Simons signed for Leipzig from Les Parisiens on loan last summer. He has had a good campaign with 24 goal contributions for the Bundesliga heavyweights.

Leipzig have opened the door for another loan spell, but the French champions are looking for a permanent exit – probably to balance their books.

Arsenal have been linked with the Dutchman for some period of time, but a deal could be difficult to pull off as he may not be assured regular first-team football.

Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard currently compete with each other on the left wing while Bukayo Saka is an undisputed starter from the right wing position.

Simons could be seen as an understudy to Saka. He could be used in rotation off the bench.

Whether he would accept such a reduced role is questionable. The La Masia graduate could give preference to another club where he can start regularly.
