Remo Freuler has insisted that he and his Bologna team-mates cannot think ahead to the Coppa Italia final during tonight’s league game against AC Milan.

Due to a rather strange quirk in the scheduling, Milan will take on Bologna twice in five days, and the first act of the double-header comes in Serie A at San Siro on Friday night. For the Rossoblu it is a crucial game, given that they are just one point outside of the Champions League places.

For Milan, not so much. Sergio Conceicao’s side are in ninth place and thus winning the cup remains the ‘easiest’ path into the Europa League. This has led to speculation about potential rotation for tonight’s game, though recent reports suggest that the coach has decided against it.

Freuler spoke to La Gazzetta dello Sport on the day of the first instalment of the battle between the Rossoneri and the Rossoblu, with his comments relayed by MilanPress.

First, you must think about Serie A…

“The second match doesn’t exist at the moment: to do well afterwards it’s essential to do great first, therefore playing as Bologna straight away in the league.”

What are the key qualities needed to beat Milan?

“Concentration, confidence and our quality. If I had to talk to the lads right now I would say just one thing: Wednesday’s match should not be thought about, it doesn’t exist. Against Milan it is fundamental today.”

How to beat the Devil:

“First of all, one thing. I read and I hear that Milan will snub this first match a bit. Come on, I don’t think so at all. Secondly: with aggression, ferocity, they need to be brought to defend and we need to score goals.”

Who would you take out of Conceicao’s team?

“No one. I want it and I will want to play it with all my players and all their players. Everyone was talking about Yamal, right? And instead Inter got through… ”

Is it a battle of talent versus a style of play?

“And who says that Milan doesn’t play football? And that Bologna doesn’t have talent?”

You have played finals before…

“Two, in the Coppa Italia. Both lost, to Lazio and Juventus. Here: you feel bad. Really bad. It was also nice to reach the quarterfinals at the European Championships, but I haven’t won a trophy yet, so I’m looking for revenge. It only depends on us, on our feet…”
