Paulo Fonseca did not mince his words after the midweek win over Red Star, and he is about to put some big changes into play.
Calciomercato.com speaks of a ‘Copernican revolution’ that Fonseca is starting to implement at Milan, one which starts from very clear signs and has manifested itself over the course of five stormy and complicated months.
During his time in charge so far the Portuguese coach has always stood out for his clarity and sincerity, even if the things he has said publicly sometimes made the players turn up their noses and perhaps undermined the serenity of the group.
The diktat that the former Lille coach has imposed is to call things as he sees them, with the approval of the club. The management have often been labelled as absent but instead it is a sign they are willing to let Fonseca get on with his work, with full trust.
What he said in his press conference was yet another overwhelming testimony, once again: “I went back to the time when I wasn’t here. The last ten games of last year and I saw that the same things were said: it hasn’t changed. You can’t say it’s just this year.”
Everyone is under the microscope and preference will be given to those who run and show they care about the shirt, especially on a special occasion like the celebration of the club’s 125th anniversary. That is why Alex Jimenez and Mattia Liberali are set for a chance.

The difficulty in relating to the so-called leaders of the and getting them used to a radical change, after so many years with the old coach, is clear and also evident in his words about the captains. He supported the hierarchy in place, without necessarily agreeing with it.
Fonseca probably expected more help and flexibility from the old guard but it did not arrive. So, the time for patience is over and the club have confirmed its support for the changes and the actions of the Portuguese.
Milan’s season now looks like a difficult chase for the top four places, for which hunger and the desire to sacrifice are needed. It is a revolution that must happen for the good of Milan and avoiding it would mean risking throwing away the season completely.
