Speculation about what Club Brugge will do with returning left-back Maxim De Cuyper appears to be over. The club have announced that the 22-year-old has signed a new deal that will run until 2026. The young full-back spent the last two seasons on loan at Westerlo, helping them win promotion in 2021/2022 and then to a top eight finish in 2022/2023. During this season he was one of the top performing defenders in the league, scoring an impressive nine goals and providing seven assists.
Now, conversations will begin as to how Club Brugge will use him and 20-year-old Bjorn Meijer. The Dutchman was impressive in his first season in Belgium, and deserves to be a regular starter. We could see a situation where De Cuyper is pushed further forward, given his output this season. Either way, its a nice dilemma for new man Ronny Deila to have going into the 2022/2023 season.
