Just like in the quarter-finals against Tigres, América must win the second leg by two goals in order to advance.
Monarcas stunned the visitors on Thursday night, scoring a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Fernando Aristeguieta and Aldo Rocha.
Monarcas were heavily aided in the 35th minute when Jorge SĂĄnchez picked up his second yellow card and left his side down a man and a goal.
SĂĄnchez wonât be the only player suspended from Sundayâs second leg as Monarcas centre-back SebastiĂĄn Vegas picked up a second yellow of his own late on in the match.
In the 16th minute, Guillermo Ochoa played a lazy ball into the path of the Monarcas midfield, which must have caught AmĂ©rica off-guard as their opponents easily got behind the defence to score the gameâs opening goal.
Miguel Herreraâs men did not wake up in the second half and were punished when Monarcas got behind the defence on the counter once again.
Rocha would bundle home the gameâs second goal and their side never appeared threatened.
Itâs no guarantee AmĂ©rica will feel a home-field advantage in Sundayâs second leg, as they have only won two of their last eight matches at the Estadio Azteca.
