The city of Milan are working on security plans for whenever Inter Milan finally clinch the Serie A title for this season.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, note the challenges that the city faces, particularly if the Nerazzurri clinch the title in the derby against AC Milan.

It certainly looks to be a matter of “when” rather than “if” Inter mathematically secure the Serie A title.

Only one team are capable of catching the Nerazzurri in the remaining matches of the season. Juventus are no longer possible candidates following their draw with Torino.

AC Milan and Inter both drew this weekend as well. That means that the gap between the city rivals remains thirteen points.

A win for Inter in the derby next Monday would therefore mean that the Nerazzurri finish the campaign as champions.

A draw, on the other hand, would ensure that Inter have to wait at least one more weekend.

In that case, the Nerazzurri would have the chance to clinch it against Torino at the San Siro.

One way or the other, if Inter win either of their next two matches, they will be celebrating the Serie A title at the San Siro.

The derby is nominally a Milan home match.

That fact presents some unique challenges of its own.

There will be a significant Nerazzurri contingent at the San Siro for the match. But the majority of the fans at the stadium will be of a Rossoneri persuasion.

Therefore, the city is working on plans to ensure that there is adequate separation between those Milan supporters and any Inter fans who descend on the stadium to celebrate the title.

On the other hand, if Inter are to win the title against Torino, it will be a home fixture at the San Siro.

But there would still be security challenges given the prospect of an open-topped bus parade from the Inter team and the fans following the route.

The city is also working on that potential eventuality. The Gazzetta report that the match against Torino could be placed in an early kickoff time in order to allow adequate time for the parade in the evening.
