In front of over 5,000 supporters at the Academy Stadium, City put on a dogged second half display to see out the victory.

From incredible winning milestones to impressive individual displays, below are some of the stats and talking points from the encounter…

25th September 2022

That’s the last time that City tasted defeat inside 90 minutes, at the hands of Chelsea in only our second match of the season.

Since then, Gareth Taylor’s side have embarked on a 14-match unbeaten run in the WSL – stretching over six months.

We have won 12 of those fixtures, scoring 31 times while conceding just eight in the process.

150 clean sheets

By keeping Chelsea at bay, City also registered our 150th clean sheet since becoming a professional outfit in 2014.

Club legend Karen Bardsley grabbed 64 of those shutouts, with Ellie Roebuck hot on her heels by registering her 62nd this weekend.

We also became the first side to keep a clean sheet against Chelsea this season in all competitions.

Home is where the heart is

Gareth Taylor’s side also racked up our 100th victory at the Academy Stadium by getting the better of the Londoners.

We have played on home soil 126 times in all competitions since moving there in 2015 – meaning our win rate stands at just shy of 80%.

City’s unbeaten run at the Academy Stadium also now stands at 22 matches, since Emma Hayes’ side got the better of us in November 2021.

Wing wizard

It was another standout performance from Lauren Hemp, who braved an ear infection to play a huge part in our victory over Chelsea.

Indeed, she has now scored and assisted in a WSL game an incredible 11 times, with only Arsenal duo Vivianne Miedema and Beth Mead having done so on more occasions in the English top flight.

With legendary Olympic gold medallist and fastest man on the planet Usain Bolt having also asked for her shirt at full-time, it was a truly memorable day at the office for the England international!

The opposition

City managed to beat Chelsea for the first time in 11 WSL matches on Sunday, but the manner of the victory demonstrates the magnitude of those three points.

As mentioned earlier, it was the first time this season that Emma Hayes’ side have failed to find the net in all competitions, a sequence which had stretched back over a year to a goalless draw with Arsenal in February 2022.

However, it was also ended WSL champions' streak of not losing by more than a one-goal margin in the league since October 2018 - 89 games ago!

Arsenal v City

City face Arsenal on Sunday 2 April, with kick-off at Meadow Park set for 12:30 (UK).

Just three points separate the top four in the Barclays Women’s Super League, with the Gunners and Gareth Taylor’s side both in the thick of the title race.

And while Arsenal came on top in the first meeting between the two sides after extra time in the Continental Cup semi-finals, City responded with a deserved 2-1 league victory at the Academy Stadium just three days later.

It promises to be yet another thrilling encounter, as we aim to build on an impressive 2-0 win over reigning WSL champions Chelsea.
