Manchester City have announced the news that Spanish defender Laia Aleixandri will be leaving the club this summer upon the expiry of her contract.

The Cityzens confirmed the player’s exit via a post on their official club website this afternoon.

The 24-year-old centre-back joined Manchester City from Spanish club Atlético Madrid in summer 2022. The Spaniard has gone on to make 88 appearances for The Cityzens in all competitions in which she has scored three goals.

While Aleixandri has failed to win a trophy in her time in England, she has put in solid performances game-on-game. She has helped raise the standards at Manchester City as the club have built a squad for the future.

Aleixandri’s Manchester City exit comes as no surprise. The player has long been rumoured to be set to leave the club this summer with a return to her native Spain potentially being on the cards. It is thought that European champions FC Barcelona are huge admirers of the defender.

Aleixandri is the first player to be leaving Manchester City this summer. Further squad news will be announced by The Cityzens throughout the close season. It could turn out to be a summer of change at The Joie Stadium with a new permanent head coach to be appointed.
