A study has been published which ranks world clubs in terms of the calculated market value of the players that they have under contract, with AC Milan and Inter right next to each other.

The 475th CIES Football Observatory Weekly Post has published a list of the 100 clubs worldwide whose players have the highest aggregate transfer value, and it also includes players who are on loan to other teams.

It is perhaps no surprise that Real Madrid lead the way with a combined squad market value of €1.728bn, and it is quite far ahead of Manchester City who are in second with €1.471bn. Another English club, Chelsea FC, are third with €1.388bn.

Milan have 47 players registered – which is actually one of the highest numbers – for a combined value of €762m, therefore a per-player average of €16.2m. That puts them 14th in the overall ranking.

Inter are one place above on €800m across 41 players, while Juventus are three places below with their €697m total spread across 46 registered players. Napoli (€598m) and Atalanta (€568m) are the other Serie A clubs in the top 30.

The site explains how they determine values: “The estimates were calculated on the basis of a statistical model developed exclusively by the CIES Football Observatory, using a methodology explained in this peer-reviewed paper recently published in the International Journal of Financial Studies.

“The estimated transfer values of the best-valued player by club in over 60 leagues worldwide are available free of charge in this online tool.”

Back in May, CIES had Milan star Rafael Leao as the most valuable player in Serie A ahead of the likes of Lautaro Martinez and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, but now Lautaro has jumped ahead.
