Chuks Aneke completed his return to Charlton Athletic on Friday after leaving the club for Birmingham City in the summer after his contract expired.

The 28-year-old was the Addicks’ top scorer in League One last season in their seventh placed finish and re-joined on a contract until the summer of 2025.

Aneke became the first signing of the Johnnie Jackson era of The Valley and he is available for selection in this afternoon’s trip to Cheltenham Town.

Instagram to express his emotions after committing his future to Charlton.

Aneke has struggled for fitness since playing for Milton Keynes Dons in League Two in 2018/19, despite his impressive goal return, and he was mainly utilised as an impact substitute in the 2020/21 campaign.

The 28-year-old joins a familiar striker department headed up by Jayden Stockley and Conor Washington, with the younger threats of Mason Burstow and Josh Davison providing competition for places.

The Addicks look set for a mid table finish, with the Papa John’s Trophy their best chance of a success this season, therefore Aneke will have time to re-settle in South London before looking to build momentum in the third tier ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

From a business standpoint, it is slightly bizarre that Charlton were unable to convince Aneke to sign a new contract in the summer but do have the financial wherewithal to buy him back just half a season later.

In his previous two full seasons at the club, Aneke managed just 13 league starts so it would have been sensible for the Addicks to insert some kind of appearance based clause into the 28-year-old’s contract.

The Addicks have struggled for attacking vigor in the last month or so and have lost all three of their league outings since Jackson was announced as permanent manager.

The club will be hoping that Aneke’s presence will give the squad a boost to get back to winning ways at the Jonny Rocks Stadium this afternoon.
