Streich retired at the end of the 2023/24 campaign, citing a lack of energy and the need to prioritise his well-being.

While his decision initially brought relief, Streich admitted that the transition to life outside of football has been far from easy.

Speaking to the Badische Zeitung, the 60-year-old said: “I sometimes felt isolated or empty. For years, I always knew where I belonged from Monday to Sunday. Suddenly, everything was different.”

Streich acknowledged the demands of the Bundesliga and how they had taken their toll over his long career.

“In recent months, I noticed my energy levels dropping. Stepping away reduced the pressure, but after the first holiday, it got mentally more difficult as everyday life returned. The routines I had lived with for years were no longer there.”

Overseeing almost 500 competitive matches during his time in Breisgau, Streich was renowned for his strong values and authenticity. And despite the initial difficulties, he said he was eventually able to regain his footing.

“Together, we worked on recognising and embracing the new possibilities and freedoms.”

A freedom in particular that Streich deliberately avoided was that of returning to Europa-Park Stadion to watch his former team. Aiming to avoid distracting head coach Julian Schuster.

“I didn't want to be filmed in the stands or asked about the game,” he said. “I prefer watching the matches on TV, but with the sound off. That works best for me.”

Streich left the door open in regards to a potential coaching return; however, he did not indicate imminent plans: “I don't know. At the moment, I'm focused on new things that are exciting and enjoyable. I'm curious myself to see where the journey takes me.”

Freiburg themselves were able to regain their place in the Europa League after a fantastic year under Schuster, and now prepare for their opening weekend Bundesliga clash on home soil against Augsburg.
