Chelsea forward Sam Kerr said that she was relieved to return to action as Australia defeated Denmark 2-0 in Sydney in a FIFA Women’s World Cup round of 16 tie yesterday.

The 29-year-old missed all of The CommBank Matildas’ group matches with a calf injury but she came off the bench to play the last 10 minutes of the tie against Denmark.

When speaking to the media after the match, Kerr said that she was relieved to finally feature at the tournament.

“It’s amazing,” Kerr said. “Hopefully, this is the last time that I ever have to talk about the calf.

“The girls have been smashing it and it’s just a relief to get back on the pitch.”

Australia safely negotiated their way through a tricky group before grinding out a place in the quarter-finals by defeating Denmark. Kerr said that she is proud of what The CommBank Matildas have achieved so far.

She said “They’ve absolutely smashed it, every player has done so well, every player in the squad has played their part.

“It’s tough coming home and having so much noise around you but we’ve all stuck together and done great. I’m really proud of them.”

Australia are next in action on Saturday when they face either France or Morocco in their quarter-final tie.
