Chelsea’s Ian Maatsen is close to signing for Borussia Dortmund

As previously reported, Borussia Dortmund were looking into the possibility of signing Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen. However, due to the number of players the Premier League outfit already had out on loan, combined with his high valuation, it appeared unlikely that Dortmund would strike a deal.

Nevertheless, according to Sky Germany, Maatsen is expected to sign for Die Schwarzgelben on a six-month loan. While the deal has not yet been completed, it is understood that the two clubs are close to an agreement.

It is a move that has been made possible by Chelsea recalling Andrey Santos from his loan at Nottingham Forest, opening the door for BvB to take Maatsen on loan until the end of the campaign. With a verbal agreement in place, the final details of the deal are being ironed out between Dortmund and Chelsea.

For Edin Terzić’s side, this deal could not have come at a better time. Julian Ryerson is expected to be out for the foreseeable future after sustaining ligament damage, while Ramy Bensebaini will be part of the Algeria squad for the upcoming African Cup of Nations, meaning that Maatsen will be heavily relied upon throughout January.

However, if Maatsen is able to impress, then Dortmund could look to sign the 21-year-old on a permanent deal in the summer. Nevertheless, it is understood that there will not be a purchase clause inserted into the contract.
