The Emma Hayes era at Chelsea is almost at an end with the club closing in on the appointment of her successor.

After more than a decade in charge, the 47-year-old will leave this summer to take over as head coach of the USA national team.

According to the Telegraph, a deal has now been agreed between the Blues and Lyon for Sonia Bompastor to take over at Kingsmeadow.

She will also be joined by assistant Camille Abily, although there is no indication of when the deal could be finalised and announced by the clubs.

In an interesting twist of fate, Hayes and Bompastor could still face off this season, with the final game for both in charge of their current side potentially being against the other in the Champions League final.

Bompastor has been in charge of Lyon since 2021 and won all major honours available to her.
