Mason Mount could leave Chelsea in the next 18 months with both parties far apart on a new contract, according to a report.

The England midfielder came through the club’s youth academy before becoming a mainstay in the first team under Frank Lampard.

Despite being a key player under Lampard, Thomas Tuchel and now Graham Potter, the jury is still out on Mount, amongst the Chelsea fan base anyway.

Or at least that is what it seems like from the outside looking in, mainly through social media.

Perhaps he is a scapegoat used by the non-match-going fans, or non-local fans.

Maybe he is just not very good at football. That can’t be it, surely? He literally plays for England and Chelsea.

Or maybe, just maybe, some Chelsea fans don’t have a f***ing clue what they are talking about or are blinded by an agenda against the player.

What is for certain, is that his future at the club is uncertain; if that even makes sense.

Mount has entered the final 18 months of his contract and talks over a new deal have been going on for quite a while now. In fact, it is believed to be a top priority for the club’s hierarchy.

The fact the Blues have spent hundreds of millions of pounds on new players doesn’t bode too well for Mount, to be honest.

And Chelsea’s track record with their own youngsters is not very good. He would be one of the few stars to go on to become a club legend after graduating from the club’s youth academy.

Some fans will not be bothered whatsoever to see that Mount and Chelsea are struggling to come to an agreement over a fresh contract, while others will be absolutely gutted.

According to the Daily Mail, Mount’s ‘future is in doubt’ after ‘rejecting’ terms he felt were ‘below what other senior players and new signings are earning’.

The 24-year-old currently earns around £80,000 per week and is keen to see his wage ‘tripled’.

While talks are at a standstill, they are ‘expected to resume at some point’, in what will be ‘an interesting test case for the new Todd Boehly regime’.

On the point earlier about Mount facing a battle to become a club legend given the Blues’ track record with young players, the report does state that Chelsea can’t take academy graduates for granted given the number of foreign players they have signed under Boehly.

While some criticism of Mount is probably a bit harsh, he is definitely going through a rough period on the pitch, but then again, Chelsea are in general.

He is one of three English midfielders with an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge.

The Premier League club were reportedly willing to sell Conor Gallagher on deadline day, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek remains on the periphery.
