Chelsea top WSL after Leicester rout

Scorers: Björn 38′, Ramírez 44′, Kaneryd 64′, Macario 78′

Chelsea overtook Manchester City as WSL leaders after a four-goal rout over Leicester City.

Nathalie Björn broke the deadlock with a hooked volley from a recycled corner towards the end of the first half.

Emma Hayes’s side soon doubled their tally when Mayra Ramírez racked up her first WSL goal with a superb solo effort.

Johanna Rytting Kaneryd added a third in the second half by surging downfield before firing home with ease.

Catarina Macario capped off her first outing since injury in June 2022 by scoring as a substitute with a sweeping strike.

The Blues now sit ahead of City on goal difference at the summit with seven games remaining.

Russo delivers derby delight for Arsenal

Scorers: Russo 48′

Arsenal Women painted north London red with a narrow 1-0 win over neighbours Tottenham at a sold out Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

It is the first time the Gunners have registered a full capacity for back-to-back women’s games but the majority of the crowd were left breathing a big early sigh of relief when Jessica Naz hit the crossbar, the closest either side came in a scoreless opening half.

It took just three second half minutes for the deadlock to be broken and it came for the home side as Alessia Russo knocked into an empty net from close range after good work by Beth Mead for the winner.

The win sees Arsenal cut the gap on City at the top to three points as Spurs stay sixth.

Liverpool turn on the style

Scorers: Mayling (PEN) 37′; Fisk 19′, Haug 29′, Koivisto 60′, 82′

A ruthless showing on the road from Liverpool saw them defeat Aston Villa and make it three wins in succession.

Liverpool take the lead on 19 minutes via Grace Fisk and doubled that advantage 10 minutes later through a Sophie Haug header.

Villa pulled one back from the penalty spot before half-time when Sarah Mayling kept a calm head to score.

But on the hour mark, the Reds ensured they’d leave with all three points thanks to two cool Emma Koivisto finishes in the final half hour which sends them up to fifth.

Brighton hit seven extend Robins’ horror run

Scorers: Connolly 48′, Aspin 71′, Thestrup 74′; Terland 20′, 54′, Bremer 24′, Pinto 64′, Haley 89′, Losada (PEN) 90+2′, Robinson 90+7′

Brighton picked up their first league win in six weeks by defeating the same opposition they did on that occasion, this time thrashing bottom side Bristol City, 7-3 in a frantic contest at Ashton Gate.

Elisabeth Terland steered in at the back post after the ball was flicked her way from a corner for the opener before Pauline Bremer reacted fastest to score via the rebound after her first attempt came back off the post.

Megan Connolly reduced the deficit within minutes of the second half starting with a fantastic free-kick but Terland quickly re-established the Seagulls’ healthy advantage, curling home after a delightful Maria Thorisdottir rabona assist.

Ten minutes later, Tatiana Pinto looked to have put the game out of reach, only for Brooke Aspin and Amalie Thestrup to set up a very nervy finale, only for things to spiral further out of their control in the final moments.

Madison Haley put things beyond doubt in the final minute and in injury-time, captain Vicky Losada struck from the penalty spot before Katie Robinson added some unneeded extras to make it seven.

As a result of the defeat, Bristol City’s winless run now stretches to 14 games.

West Ham snatch point against Man Utd

Scorers: Asseyi 85′; Williams 4′

West Ham left it late to strike a blow to Manchester United’s European ambitions.

Rachel Williams gave the visitors a fourth minute lead when Katie Zelem did well to win the ball back and picked out the veteran striker to score.

But Viviane Asseyi claimed a point for the Hammers by lobbing Mary Earps from 25 yards in the 85th minute to frustrate Marc Skinner’s side.

Saturday’s result

  1. Manchester City 2-1 Everton
