After Chelsea added yet another three points to their Barclays Women’s Super League campaign on Saturday afternoon, the media heard from boss Sonia Bompastor post-match at the Emirates Stadium, as she turned her attention to the next challenge. Despite Arsenal’s comeback efforts, the London derby turned out to be Jonas Eidevall’s last in charge of the Gunners, as he resigned from his post on Wednesday morning.
Sonia Bompastor and her side will travel to FC Twente in Round 2 of the UWCL Group Stage this Thursday, before hosting Tottenham Hotspur in the WSL on Sunday.
Chelsea dominated the home side during the opening half of the match, but the second half was a different story. Whilst Arsenal were unable to equalise, they threatened Bompastor’s side on numerous occasions after the break.
“It was really close to a perfect way to start, but now I just need to make sure we sustain that and be more consistent to be able to play that style for 90 minutes,” said the manager.
Bompastor continued, “I wish we were able to possess more of the ball in the second half, managing the tempo of the game, but it is really hard to play against a really good team away from home.”
“The good point is that we didn’t concede any goals in the second half,” the head coach noted, “We suffered for sure, but it was a good mentality from us not to concede in the second half.”
“There is always room for improvement,” the Blues boss declared. “I clearly see where we need to improve as a team.”
Touching on the squad’s Champions League ambitions, Bompastor highlighted “As I said in the game against Real Madrid, we need to be more consistent. Even though we have a squad who is young, we have experienced players and should be able to manage the tempo in the game better than we did.”
Defensive lapses could be what Bompastor needs to focus on strengthening, after her side looked arguably weaker at the back on occasion against both Real Madrid and Arsenal.
Ahead of the fixture, Bompastor picked up the WSL Manager of the Month Award. Before the clash, the manager had made it clear she expected a difficult game, and expressed the significance of the highly-anticipated London derby.
Bompastor’s journey in charge of Chelsea is only just beginning, and along with success, it is already bringing its unique challenges.
