According to Jacob Steinberg of The Guardian, Chelsea are monitoring Frenkie de Jong and could target the Barcelona midfielder this summer if his move to Manchester United breaks down.
The Old Trafford outfit are working on reaching an agreement with the player and if the deal goes through will pay Barcelona €65 million guaranteed plus €20 million in add-ons.
De Jong is reportedly open to joining United, however, he wants to play in the Champions League, something he won’t be able to enjoy at Old Trafford.
The midfielder previously worked under new United manager Erik ten Hag at Ajax, another important factor that could influence the outcome.
Barcelona signed the 25-year-old from Ajax in 2019. His current deal at Camp Nou expires in 2026.
