Carney Chukwuemeka has flown to Argentina to join England for U20 World Cup

After Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Newcastle United, Carney Chukwuemeka took a flight to Argentina to join England for the U20 World Cup.

The 19-year-old was selected by Ian Foster for the FIFA U20 World Cup, but Chelsea had to withdraw him owing to Mateo Kovacic and N’Golo Kante’s injuries.

Chukwuemeka missed England’s group-stage matches, although he will be expected to participate after playing in Chelsea’s last three matches.

The midfielder started against Manchester United and Manchester City and came off the bench against the Magpies.

Chukwuemeka joined Chelsea from Aston Villa for £20 million but barely saw any action in the entire season, appearing in 14 Premier League games this season.

England, meanwhile, finished first in their group after drawing 0-0 with Iraq on Sunday. On Tuesday night, they will play Italy in the round of 16.

Chelsea finished 12th overall, and Mauricio Pochettino is anticipated to take over the team the following week. The 19-year-old will be aiming to be a part of his plans for next season after Chukwuemeka’s last three outings gave us an overview of what he can do.

It will be a great chance to play for England U20, something he couldn’t do for Chelsea this year, it will help him prepare for the following season and boost his confidence.

Frank Lampard should have given the 19-year-old an opportunity to play as the season was already finished after multiple losses; it seemed strange that he was denied significant playing time. However, he demonstrated his credentials in his previous three games.

He will start from a clean slate under Mauricio Pochettino, who is known to give chances to youngsters. He will also return from Argentina with significant experience of playing at a U20 World Cup – which is no small feat.

Chelsea can loan him out to any Championship or Premier League team in the event that they choose not to keep him. As we did with Lewi Colwill, who established his name at Brighton Hove & Albion.
