Chelsea have agreed the loan signing of Joao Felix for the rest of the season.
The Blues will pay Atletico Madrid around £9 million for the loan and it’s not believed an option to make the move permanent will be agreed.
Yet another signing for Chelsea under Todd Boehly’s consortium.
The west London club are having a tough 2022/23 season. They sit 10th in the Premier League, while they’ve been dumped out of both domestic cups by Manchester City.
And it’s even worse when you consider their spending.
In the summer, Chelsea spent a record £273.5 million and have already started getting the chequebook out this month with the arrivals of Andrey Santos, Benoit Badiashile, David Fofana and now Felix.
And when looking at Premier League club’s net spend so far during the 2022/23 season, it’s really not a good look.
Via research from Reddit user, LessBrain, a graphic has been created to show each team’s net spend this season including the summer and any January transfers so far (as of January 10th).
Look away now, Chelsea fans…
Chelsea lead the way – by some distance – with a net spend of more than £300 million. With the Champions League remaining as their only hope of silverware this campaign, it’s been a bit of a disaster.
Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Marc Cucurella, Wesley Fofana and Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang haven’t come close to justifying their hefty transfer fees so far.
Some way below Chelsea is Manchester United, who are in second with a net spend of almost £200 million. With Erik ten Hag really starting to make his mark, along with the signings of Antony, Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez, it’s been money well spent.
Nottingham Forest are third having made 22 signings in the summer. Their aim was to survive relegation and they currently sit 15th so their spending can be justified right now.
Forest are above the club that sit fourth in the net spend table – West Ham. David Moyes is under enormous pressure as they’re 17th in the Premier League despite a net of £165 million.
Tottenham and Newcastle complete the top six with both clubs looking to qualify for next season’s Champions League with a top-four finish.
League leaders, Arsenal, are eighth in the table with a £90 million net spend, while Liverpool are tenth with £66 million outlay following their purchase of Cody Gakpo.
At the other end of the spectrum, three Premier League clubs are still in the green this season in terms of net spend.
Brighton are eighth this season having lost Graham Potter to Chelsea. It’s even more impressive when you consider they’ve made a profit of £82 million this season.
Manchester City (£70m) and Leicester (£61m) are the other two clubs to have made a profit in the transfer window so far in 2022/23.
