Chelsea's Edouard Mendy believes he should have been in the running for the Ballon D'Or.

The Senegalese keeper was one of the best players for the Blues last term, helping them win the Champions League and reach the FA Cup Final.

He was also top quality in the Premier League in 2020-2021, but did not make the top 30 in the Ballon D'Or voting.

Mendy believes that being African may have counted against him, as there were no international competitions for them, while Europeans and South Americans had the Euros and Copa América respectively.

He told Telefoot he 'didn't understand' the snub", adding: "The best response was to stay the course on the pitch to show that my name deserved to be in the top 30.

"I think being African did me a disservice because I didn't play in any international competitions last year."
