Chelsea have stepped up their efforts to sign a forward this month, though the club are facing a ‘stand-off’ with Paris Saint-Germain over their pursuit of Edinson Cavani.

The Uruguay international has become one of the most in-demand players of the transfer window following his decision to leave the Ligue 1 champions, Cavani having handed in a transfer request and informed PSG of his desire for a new challenge.

Thomas Tuchel’s side are expected to allow the 32-year-old, who is out-of-contract this summer, to leave during the current transfer window, though a proposal from Atletico Madrid has already been rejected having been below their valuation.

Chelsea are amongst a trio of Premier League clubs, including Manchester United and Tottenham, believed to be monitoring developments, with the Times reporting that Frank Lampard’s side have made an offer to loan Cavani until the end of the season.

The proposal is believed to include a loan fee and the covering of Cavani’s £360,000-a-week wages, though PSG would prefer to secure a fee through a permanent transfer before the deadline at the end of the month.

However, the Telegraph are reporting that the two teams are now at a ‘stand-off’, with PSG demanding a fee of €15m (£12.6m) to part with the former Napoli star this month, a fee Chelsea believe is excessive given Cavani’s contract situation, age and desired salary.

Lampard’s also faces a difficult task in persuading the player to move to England amid Atletico Madrid’s interest, with Cavani’s father admitting the Spanish capital would be an ideal destination for the next stage of his son’s career.

“He wants to join another club in Europe. That would please me that he plays here [at Atletico], yes,” Luis Cavani told El Chiringuito.

“[Diego] Simeone wants him now [in January]. The head coach of Paris Saint-Germain [Thomas Tuchel] has also said he needs him to help compete in the Champions League. But PSG do not want him to go to Atletico Madrid if he finds an agreement.

“I think there is a strong chance he will go to Atletico, the option to join the club always remains in June. There are lots of other clubs but when you give your word to a team, you respect it.

“If tomorrow, he if is available and Atletico still want him, I think he will sign.”
