Diego Coppola has caught the eye of half of Europe. At just 21 years of age, the Hellas Verona centre-back is already attracting interest from a number of top clubs, and it is no coincidence. His reading of the game, his ability to anticipate attacks and his physique command respect. Among the suitors are three Premier League giants: Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham. Each have their own motives, but all possess a clear objective. They want to armour their defence with a young talent who could become a star.

Chelsea Are In Competition For Diego Coppola

As reported by Graeme Bailey of TBR Football, the Blues are keeping a close eye on the Italian U21. After a shaky campaign in defence, the Stamford Bridge outfit know they need to strengthen if they are to compete with the best. Coppola fits the profile they are looking for; not only because of his age, but also because of his style of play.

The club are clear that they must close lines if they want to take a step forward. With the Champions League assured, signing a centre-back with potential and quality becomes even more important. The player’s entourage also looks favourably on such a step, knowing that he can grow on a demanding stage and be full of focus.

T4O Opinion:

But should Chelsea make Coppola their priority? In my opinion, yes, for several reasons. First, their structural need in defence is obvious. Thiago Silva is gone, Benoît Badiashile has yet to settle, and Levi Colwill continues to show mixed signals. Secondly, signing a defender who can grow within Maresca’s system is vital. The Italian coach prefers centre-backs who can play out wide, with good ball-playing ability and have pace. Coppola has those qualities. He still has room for improvement, but with minutes and confidence, he could soon establish himself.

Thirdly, the Italian is financially viable. Verona will not be able to resist too much if the English offer a fair sum. And fourth, competition for the player will increase. If the Blues do not move quickly, Liverpool or Spurs could move ahead. In this type of transaction, acting fast makes all the difference. Chelsea would not only gain a centre-back of the future, but also prevent a direct rival from strengthening their backline. So if the club really want to compete in Europe, signing Coppola would be a step in the right direction.
