Matt Law of the Daily Telegraph is reporting this morning that sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart have signed contract extensions at Chelsea to commit them to the club for the next 6 years.

The duo – along with recruitment heads Joe Shields and Sam Jewell, have seen their deals extended from 2028 to 2031, as a reward and a recognition of their work which is now starting to pay off.

Not long ago this move would have been met with howls of disappointment by fans who were befuddled by some of their moves, but the steady improvement in results and performances since April, culminating in the victories in the Conference League and Club World Cup, have dramatically changed the perception of the group and their work.

Law’s report says that the contracts for all four are “heavily incentive based”, reflecting the same performance based structure that they’re signing players to.

The sporting directors have been working with unprecedented volumes of traffic since being appointed, with Chelsea having spent more than £2bn and recouped around £900m since the summer of 2022.

Chelsea’s 3 pillars leading to success in the market

Law’s piece is clearly repeating some lines coming from directly within the club. It notes that the Blues are following a strategy which respects “three pillars” when signing players – quality, mentality and playing experience.

The example they give is Jorrel Hato – only 19, but with two years of regular football for Ajax already under his belt. They are also proud of the “future planning” of some of their moves which saw them buy the likes of Estevao Willian and Kendy Paez more than a year before they actually arrived at the club.

Their ability to sell players for a good price has also been notable.
