The Premier League is back and this is what went down from Saturday’s action.
Scorers: Jorginho pen 45+9′
Chelsea got their campaign off to a winning start thanks to a narrow victory at Goodison Park on Saturday evening.
Everton were dealt an early blow after losing Ben Godfrey to a nasty looking injury that saw him stretchered off to be replaced by Mason Holgate.
Raheem Sterling capitalised on a Jordan Pickford mistake to score in the closing moments of the half, only to be denied by the offside flag.
But the lengthy period of added time due to Godfrey’s injury allowed the Blues another chance, this time from the penalty spot after Ben Chilwell was bundled over, and Jorginho shook up his technique to stride forward and stroke into the far corner.
That proved to be the only goal of the game as despite some half-chances from both after the interval, no other real chances or goals were forthcoming despite 10 minutes of injury-time to go with the eight earlier.
Scorers: Ward-Prowse 12′; Sessegnon 21′, Dier 31, Salisu OG 61′, Kulusevski 63′
Dejan Kulusevski put in a superb performance as Tottenham came from behind to punish Southampton.
The visitors hadn’t read the script as James Ward-Prowse netted a superb volley to put his side ahead, but the home side were soon level when Ryan Sessegnon scored his first goal for Tottenham from a sublime Dejan Kulusevski assist.
Normal service was resumed for Antonio Conte’s men, when a delicious ball in from Son Heung-min was met by a glancing header from Eric Dier.
Spurs continued to push after the break when Sessegnon had the ball in the back of the net for a second time, only for his attempt to be ruled out for offside, and Emerson Royal went close with a header at the far post.
The poor start was a distant memory when Royal’s effort was turned in by Southampton’s Mohammed Salisu, and just two minutes later Kulusevski curled in a beautiful effort to make it 4-1.
Sessegnon was brought off to a standing ovation as Ivan Perišić made his debut for Spurs.
Scorers: Schär 58′, Wilson 78′
Nottingham Forest were made aware of how much work there is to do as they lost 2-0 to Newcastle in their first Premier League encounter in 23 years.
That was despite a display of some of Steve Cooper’s impressive new signings in the starting lineup.
There was a late change to the bench for Newcastle as Paul Dummett was brought in to replace Jamaal Lascelles, who was injured in the warm-up.
Forest had their chances, yet it was Newcastle who had the best of the chances, but couldn’t find the breakthrough until Fabian Schär hit a rocket from 20 yards which flew into the top corner.
The Magpies doubled their lead thanks to a lovely finish from Callum Wilson with the outside of his boot.
Scorers: Lerma 3′, Moore 80′
Bournemouth got off to a flying start in their return to the Premier League with a surprise 2-0 win over Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa.
Jefferson Lerma fired home after just three minutes when he was first to a loose ball inside the box.
Both Danny Ings and Jacob Ramsey had chances to equalise before half-time, but Villa couldn’t find a way through.
It was the new boys who doubled their lead though, thanks to a Kieffer Moore header.
Scorers: Podence 6′; Rodrigo 23′, Rayan Ait Nouri OG 74′
Leeds took a valuable three points at home to Wolves, despite some decent play from the visitors.
Wolves took the lead early after a superb ball from Pedro Neto allowed Hwang Hee-chan set up Daniel Podence to fire home from close range.
Leeds were furious not long afterwards when what looked like a certain penalty was denied by VAR, after José Sa came for a long ball and made a mess of it, taking out Rasmus Kristensen in the box.
They soon had their equaliser though, as Sa made a mess of a low shot from Rodrigo at the near post.
Wolves had been playing well in the second half, but it was Leeds who went 2-1 up which was initially attributed to new signing Brenden Aaronson, but later changed to an Ait Nouri own goal.
Scorers: Mitrović 32′, pen 72′; Núñez 64′, Salah 81′.
Aleksandar Mitrović scored twice as newly-promoted Fulham pulled off a surprise opening-day draw over Liverpool after leading twice at Craven Cottage.
The Cottagers took a deserved lead after 32 minutes when Kenny Tete’s looped cross found Mitrović at the back post, with the Serbian rising above Trent Alexander-Arnold to head the newly-promoted side ahead.
Liveprool almost instantly found an equaliser when Luis Díaz made room for a shot inside the area but saw his shot denied by the crossbar.
Neeskens Kebano almost gave his side a two-goal cushion in the 57th minute with a low right-footed shot from close range which struck the width of the post.
They were pegged back for the first time by Darwin Núñez, who came off the bench to equalise midway through the second half, turning in Mohamed Salah’s low cross with a back-heeled finish.
However, Mitrović restored the lead with a well-taken penalty after referee Andy Madley had judged that Virgil van Dijk had brought the Serbian down in the area.
Salah then salvaged a point nine points from time, slotting past Marek Rodak after Núñez had touched down TrentAlexander-Arnold’s ball.
Jordan Henderson came close to stealing the win in the last minute with his 25-yard curler striking the crossbar.
A stunning opening-day point for Marco Silva’s side, who extend their Premier League unbeaten run over Liverpool to three games.
