Another bad result for Chelsea and Graham Potter – this time a home loss to Aston Villa – sees the manager back under serious pressure.

The ownership have never done anything but back him, but the results are so bad and the stakes are so high that even those very closely tied to the club are predicting that the end could be nigh.

Matt Law has covered the club for years for the Telegraph, and last night he wrote that Chelsea’s Champions League tie against Real Madrid in a couple of weeks could be decisive:

“Other than Chelsea’s tough league run, there is the small matter of a Champions League quarter-final tie against Real Madrid on the horizon, which may prove decisive to Potter’s hopes of keeping his job until the summer if other results do not quickly improve.”

It’s hardly a bold prediction – of course if he wins it it will be a huge boost for him, and of course if he loses it he will be running out of chances to prove he’s any good – but it is probably an accurate one.

As Law writes, the upcoming league games look very difficult, and an unlikely win for Potter against Madrid could be the only tonic for him.
