Chelsea have confirmed top spot in their UEFA Women’s Champions League group with an impressive 3-0 victory over French club Paris Saint-Germain at Stamford Bridge this evening.

The Blues simply needed to avoid defeat by two goals or more at The Bridge but they did much better than that, cruising to a 3-0 victory over a Paris Saint-Germain side who have been so strong in the group stage themselves in recent seasons.

It was the visitors who threatened the most early on. Sandy Baltimore saw a dangerous effort fly narrowly wide before Lieke Martens shot straight at home keeper Zećira Mušović. Kadidiatou Diani then looked to lob Mušović from 40 yards out but her effort crashed off the crossbar.

Chelsea warmed to the task and the lively Lauren James went close on a couple of occasions. The youngster then forced her way through on goal again but visiting keeper Sarah Bouhaddi pulled off an excellent save to keep the England international’s third attempt out.

The South West Londoners broke the deadlock two minutes before half-time when Sam Kerr ran at the Paris Saint-Germain defence before striking the ball into the top corner from 18 yards.

Chelsea were better in the second half and they made it 2-0 after 55 minutes. James was gifted possession and after some nice play including Fran Kirby and Kerr, the ball was returned to the 21-year-old and she steered her effort into the net. Two goals soon became three for Chelsea with James firing in again from a Kerr cut-back.

Beth England drilled an effort narrowly wide across goal late on before Jelena Čanković saw a shot shave the post in second half injury time as the game ended 3-0 in Chelsea’s favour.

Chelsea now go into the quarter-final draw as one of the seeded teams. They will face AS Roma, Lyon or Bayern Munich in the next round.
