Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella has backed his side to build on their previous campaign, which saw them qualify for Champions League football.

The Blues played in the Europa Conference League last term, and aside from a scare during the final, they won the competition with ease.

They also finished fourth in the Premier League, sealing a return to Europe’s elite competition, something Cucurella says his team will relish: “We qualified for the Champions League because we deserved to,” he said.

“No one has given us anything for free. We are fighting every week, and now we are ready to show we can compete in Europe.

“I think last season we achieved all that we wanted. Now this season, we’ll try to be better. I think we can be more consistent in the league, because we started strong, and then we lost a bit of power and a bit of confidence resulting in some lost or drawn games. We need to improve and be more consistent.

“And then we have the good challenge of playing Champions League, I think is important and for a lot of players, it is the first time we have played in the tournament. We will bring a lot of desire and energy and take it game-by-game.”

Focusing on the present, should Chelsea beat ES Tunis in their final Club World Cup group game, they will more than likely come up against Bayern Munich in the next round, and if they got through that, it would be PSG after.

Both games would be potentially good practice for what they might face in Europe next season but Cucurella did notwant to get ahead of himself: “Yes, both these teams are very good, and if we need to play against them, we will give it all we have got. They could be important games. But we have a big game tomorrow first [against Tunis].

“It’s true that in this tournament there are a lot of important teams, and going far is something we see as a big responsibility. We are confident if we have to play these kinds of teams in the tournament.”
