Chelsea striker Liam Delap is set to miss several weeks of action after picking up a hamstring injury against Fulham on Saturday.

A Joao Pedro header and a successful penalty take from Enzo Fernandez gave the Blues a 2-0 win over their west London rivals at Stamford Bridge.

The result sends them to the top of the Premier League table on seven points from their opening three matches.

It’s solid start to the season for Chelsea, but they were dealt a setback early in the first half when Delap went to the ground clutching his right leg. The issue forced him off the pitch and he was replaced by Tyrique George in the 14th minute.

Enzo Maresca confirmed that the striker, who joined the club from Ipswich Town for £30m this summer, injured his hamstring, telling TNT Sports that he will be sidelined for six to eight weeks.

“The injury doesn’t look good. He was full speed, hamstring. It requires weeks,” Maresca said in his press conference after the game.

“In terms of another striker, we just finished the game. Now we will see if we take any decisions.”

The injury blow could not have come at a more inopportune time for Chelsea, who just sold Christopher Nkunku and agreed to loan Nicolas Jackson to Bayern Munich.

On the future of Jackson and whether it was too late to prevent him from leaving the club, Maresca added: “I just said, we finish the game and came here. We will see. I don’t know.

“When you have two strikers, it’s enough. When one is injured, it is probably not enough.”
