Chelsea and Liverpool are set to go head-to-head in the £60m race to sign RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner.

The Germany international has enjoyed a prolific start to the season with the Bundesliga leaders, the 23-year-old’s double against Union Berlin on Saturday taking his tally to 25 goals for the campaign in all competitions, including 20 in just 18 league appearances.

Werner’s form has now attracted Premier League interest with the Mirror reporting that Chelsea have now opened talks over a potential deal, Frank Lampard keen to secure attacking reinforcements to ease the goalscoring burden on top scorer Tammy Abraham.

The west London side are interested in a January deal for the player having seen their transfer-ban lifted, and the Blues interest could now force Liverpool‘s hand who had been prepared to wait until the end of the season to secure a deal, while Manchester United have also been linked.

Jurgen Klopp is believed to be a long-term admirer of Werner and was preparing to make a move during the summer, the Premier League leaders having accepted it would be difficult to entice the player away from the Red Bull Arena given the club’s current pursuit of a maiden Bundesliga title.

Chelsea’s strong interest could change that, however, and the Reds will now rival any moves to take the player to Stamford Bridge before the closure of the transfer window at the end of the month.
