Charlton Athletic midfielder Terry Taylor has been the subject of transfer speculation.
Charlton Athletic midfielder Terry Taylor has been linked with a move away from The Valley this summer, with League One clubs reportedly interested in signing the 23-year-old on loan.
According to Football Insider, Rotherham United and Barnsley are interested in taking Charlton Athletic midfielder Terry Taylor on loan ahead of the 2024/25 season.
Championship side Plymouth Argyle reportedly had a bid rejected for the former Burton Albion man earlier in the summer.
Taylor signed for Charlton after he left the Brewers at the end of his contract last summer, although the Addicks were required to pay £150,000 in compensation due to his age.
The 23-year-old struggled with injury problems during his first season at The Valley, which limited him to just seven appearances in all competitions over the course of the campaign.
Taylor did not feature once after the arrival of Nathan Jones as manager in February, although he did play for the under 21s at times towards the end of the season, presumably as there was no need to risk his fitness in the first-team as the Addicks' had nothing to play for.
Taylor has been part of Charlton's squad during pre-season, and as things stand, it looks like he will provide cover for Conor Coventry at the base of midfield next term.
Therefore, it is not a huge surprise that journalist Richard Cawley does not believe the report linking the midfielder with a loan move to another League One promotion contender is accurate.
With Charlton needing to move players on before they can bring more in, they should definitely be keeping hold of Taylor. The Addicks have made moves for Asmir Begovic and Karl Hein in an attempt to strengthen their goalkeeping department, while trialists Dan Potts and Danny Hylton featured in Charlton's squad for their final pre-season friendly against Portsmouth.
Jones seems to be prioritising signing a new goalkeeper and another left-sided centre-back, so there is no need to let Taylor leave on loan when that would leave him short of defensive midfielders.
Also, Charlton are yet to see the best of Taylor, who came with a good reputation when he joined the club last summer. Not The Top 20 Podcast teamed up with the EFL in January 2023 to produce a list of 21 future stars playing in the Championship, League One and League Two, with Taylor featuring alongside Charlton striker Miles Leaburn.
If he can enjoy a run of fitness and reproduce the form he showed during his last season at Burton, Taylor could yet turn out to be a good signing for the Addicks.
Not only does the fact that Rotherham and Barnsley are showing interest in Taylor suggest that he is good enough to be part of Charlton's squad, but sending him on loan to either of those clubs would also strengthen a promotion rival in League One.
The Addicks have already sold Alfie May to Birmingham City and seen George Dobson sign for Wrexham after leaving SE7 at the end of his contract, so they do not need to lose any more players to other top sides in the third tier.
Charlton need to keep hold of Taylor to ensure they have enough options in midfield next season, especially considering he has the ability to contribute during the upcoming campaign, so it should come as a relief to supporters that Cawley's update suggests that he will not be moving on during the current transfer window.
