Charlton Athletic are attempting to make two Premier League signings this January.
According to Richard Cawley, the Addicks have made a loan offer to Manchester City for Lewis Fiorini.
The League One side is also aiming to sign Conor Coventry from West Ham, and have made an offer for the Irish midfielder.
Fiorini has previously spent time on loan with Lincoln City and Blackpool, but has spent the first half of this season back at the Man City youth academy.
The 21-year-old has been unable to break into Pep Guardiola’s first team plans, so may be sent out on loan to gain further experience in the second half of the campaign.
January represents Michael Appleton’s first chance to make significant changes to the first team squad at Charlton, having taken over as manager in early September.
The club is hoping it can bridge the gap to the top six in the remainder of the term, with new signings being sought to help in that effort.
Both Fiorini and Coventry have found themselves well down the pecking order in their respective clubs so far this season, so could be tempted to make the switch to the Valley.
Coventry has yet to feature for the Hammers in the league this term, having previously failed to break into David Moyes’ first team plans at the London club.
However, the third tier side are showing their intentions for the January window by making early offers for players.
The pair can both play in midfield, with Coventry preferring a deeper role compared to Fiorini.
The West Ham player spent the second half of last year with Rotherham United, featuring 16 times for the Millers as they finished 19th in the Championship.
Charlton are currently 14th in the League One table, sitting 14 points adrift of the play-off places.
The Addicks do have games in hand on some of their third division rivals, but a recent run of poor form has also seen Charlton slide down the standings.
Appleton’s side has lost its last three league games, failing to win any of their last six.
Charlton’s last league win came on 28 November when they earned all three points at home to Cheltenham Town.
Next up for the London club is an away trip to Port Vale on Saturday.
Fiorini and Coventry both spent last season in the Championship, where they showed they were capable of competing at that level.
So succeeding in signing both of those players would be a boost to Appleton’s side for the second half of the campaign.
There are still other areas of the team that also need improvement, like defence, but this would be a positive addition to their midfield options and bring extra creativity to the side.
