When Charlton Athletic appointed former Luton Town boss Nathan Jones back in February, following the poor performances under previous manager Michael Appleton, it was a clear display of the Addicks' ambition.

Despite a dire spell in the Premier League with Southampton during 2022/23, Jones is still rightfully very well respected by observers of the Football League, courtesy of his impressive exploits with the Hatters.

At Kenilworth Road, the Welshman won promotion from League Two to League one in 2018, before leaving the Bedfordshire outfit to join Stoke City in January 2019.

But despite his exit, the Hatters were still able to win the 2019 League One title, and subsequently solidified their second tier status, finishing the 2019/20 season in 19th.

Jones would return to Luton ahead of the 2020/21 campaign, and would steer the Hatters to a top-half Championship finish, before guiding them to the play-offs in 2022.

The Addicks will undoubtedly have been impressed by such feats on Jones' CV, while the Valley faithful will hope that their side can mount a promotion push of their own in 2024/25.

The former Hatters boss has already shown positive signs with the London outfit, as following a defeat in his first game in the Addicks' dug-out to Reading on 10th February, he then oversaw a promising run of 14 unbeaten games.

A final day defeat to Wycombe Wanderers is unlikely to have dampened spirits at the Valley too much, while a promotion challenge may hinge on the success of the upcoming summer transfer window.

The Addicks have been linked with Coventry City star Matty Godden

According to the South London Press & Mercury, the Addicks are eyeing a move for Sky Blues forward Matty Godden, who has been a great servant to his club over the years.

When Mark Robins' men were promoted from League One to the Championship following the shortened 2019/20 season, Godden scored 14 goals in just 26 third tier outings, before helping the Sky Blues secure their Championship status by netting six goals in the 2020/21 season.

The 32-year-old produced his best ever second-tier goal tally during the 2021/22 campaign, with 12 strikes in 24 appearances as Robins and co secured a top-half finish.

The Sky Blues went on to reach the 2023 Championship play-off final, and ultimately fell at the final hurdle as they lost a penalty shoot-out to Luton, but Godden played a key role in the regular season with eight goals and four assists.

Godden could be a strong signing for the Addicks

The forward clearly has a dangerous eye for goal himself, but perhaps he is at his best when he is able to support an even more clinical goalscorer.

For two-and-a-half seasons, Godden was the perfect complement for the lethal Viktor Gyokeres, who scored 21 goals during the 2022/23 Championship campaign across both the regular season and the play-offs.

He could play a similar role at the Valley, alongside Alfie May, who is arguably the best striker at League One level, after claiming the 2023/24 golden boot with 23 goals despite the Addicks' bottom-half finish.

May also had a deadly eye for goal at his former club, Cheltenham Town, where he scored 20 third tier goals during 2022/23, having scored 23 in the previous campaign.

Under the stewardship of Jones, Godden and May could be a formidable strike force, who have the ability to give the Addicks serious promotion credentials, so the club simply must pursue a deal for the Sky Blues man.
