Charlton Athletic have confirmed that forward Ella Rutherford has sustained an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury.

The Addicks announced the news this evening via an update on their official club website.

The 22-year-old sustained the injury as Charlton Athletic defeated Coventry United 1-0 at The Oakwood on Sunday. Rutherford was replaced by Emma Follis in the 64th minute of the match with the player clearly in pain. The Charlton Athletic medical staff have now fully-assessed Rutherford’s injury and it has been confirmed that she has ruptured her Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL).

The forward will now miss the rest of the season along with the early part of the 2023/2024 campaign. Rutherford is believed to be in good spirits and she issued an emotional message to her teammates, family, friends and supporters this evening via her personal Twitter account.

She said “There are just no words, heartbroken to have torn my ACL last Sunday against Coventry.

“However, this isn’t the first bump in the road. I’m ready to buckle my seatbelt and hit it at 100mph. I promise my teammates I’ll be their number one fan. We have a special group and can go on to achieve great things.

“I want to thank my family, friends and Charlton Athletic for carrying the weight of my emotions right now. I’m down but not out. Time to get ready for surgery. I’ll be back, see you soon Addicks! – ER19”

Rutherford has been with Charlton Athletic since 2020 and she has played an important role in the development of the team in the Barclays Women’s Championship. Her teammates will now be determined to go on and win the league title as a tribute to her.
