Uganda fell to Algeria (3-0) on Monday, August 4, 2025, in the opening match for both teams at CHAN 2024 at the Nelson Mandela National Stadium in Kampala. Ghezala, Meziane, and Bayazid secured the victory for the Greens to kick off their campaign in style.

Algeria delivered a tactical masterclass against the Ugandan co-hosts in this first Group C clash. The Fennecs lived up to their billing as favorites, producing a composed and controlled performance from start to finish, giving their opponents little room to maneuver despite a home crowd firmly behind the locals.

Ghezala breaks the deadlock in the first half

The opening period began at a slow tempo, with Uganda looking to capitalize on home advantage and passionate support. However, Algeria quickly took control of the midfield with crisp passing and fluid ball movement. The breakthrough came in the 36th minute from a corner delivered by Meziane and expertly headed home at the near post by Ayoub Ghezala. The Cranes tried to respond with long-range efforts from Joel Sserunjogi and Patrick Kakande, but Zakaria Bouhalfaya remained alert in the Algerian goal.

One-way second half as the Greens confirm their dominance

Uganda emerged from the break with greater attacking intent but ran into a resolute Algerian defense. Madjid Bougherra's men protected their lead well and remained a threat on the counter.Abderrahmane Meziane doubled the advantage in the 76th minute with a left-footed strike after being set up by Messalla Merbah.

Just three minutes later, Soufiane Bayazid made it three, finishing from close range after a slick move initiated by Naoufel Khacef. These two goals in the space of three minutes shattered Uganda's last hopes.

This opening defeat seriously complicates Uganda's task in Group C, which also features Guinea, South Africa, and Niger. Algeria's Greens temporarily claim top spot in the group.
