CHAN 2024: CAF sanctions Kenya’s Kasarani Stadium
Despite an almost flawless run at CHAN 2024, where they top Group A with 7 points from three matches, Kenya’s Harambee Stars have seen their celebration dampened by crowd trouble in the stands. CAF is raising the stakes.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced strict measures on Monday following multiple breaches of security regulations at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani.
During the first two matches against DR Congo and Angola, the Kenyan Federation (FKF) had already received warnings and a suspended fine. However, the same chaotic scenes repeated themselves against Morocco: ticketless fans forcing their way in, scuffles, stones thrown at security forces, and the use of tear gas and stun grenades causing panic.
The result: the stadium’s capacity has now been slashed from 60,000 to 27,000 seats for the upcoming matches. Only holders of electronic tickets will be allowed entry, with thermal tickets strictly prohibited. CAF is also demanding a comprehensive awareness campaign on access and security regulations.
