Championship chief issues verdict on Derby County situation | OneFootball

Peterborough United owner Darragh MacAnthony has labelled the situation at Derby County as “horrible” and said he hopes it gets sorted for the sake of the fans after it emerged the club was set to go into administration last night.

The Rams announced in a statement yesterday that they were set to go into administration due to multiple factors, including their inability to find a buyer despite negotiations with a number of interested parties.

The EFL has since confirmed that Derby will face a subsequent 12-point deduction, while it is understood they could also be handed a nine-point deduction due to an alleged breach of financial regulations.

MacAnthony, who is the owner of Championship rivals Peterborough, was pressed on the situation at Pride Park on Twitter yesterday and was quick to provide a response.

Off-field issues have plagued the East Midlands club over the past year or so, including players not being paid, EFL investigations, transfer embargos, and Wayne Rooney only being given a threadbare squad for the 2021/22 campaign.

Despite that, the Rams have made a solid start to the season and are 16th in the Championship ahead of their game against Stoke City today.

The Verdict

MacAnthony rarely minces his words and he’s bang on here, the situation at Derby is horrible and a mammoth blow for the long-suffering supporters of the club.

They’ve been through a fair bit over the past few years but yesterday’s announcement is surely the low point and things have the potential to get even worse.

You’d hope that a big club like Derby will be able to get through this but it’s still a dreadful, dreadful situation that speaks to the issues in English football.

As a side scrapping for survival, Peterborough look set to be a team that benefits from the points deduction.
