Champions League final chaos to prove detrimental for France’s bid to host Women’s Euro 2025

The chaotic scenes that preceded last season’s Champions League final held in the Stade de France will lead to damaging consequences for French football. According to a report from L’Équipe, the country’s bid to host the Women’s European Championships in 2025 is not expected to get the nod from UEFA. On Tuesday in Lisbon, UEFA will convene for their board meeting and choose the host for the upcoming tournament. Switzerland, Poland and an association of Nordic countries with Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland are the other applicants.

L’Équipe adds that every UEFA board member was at Saint-Denis on Saturday, May 28th for the Champions League final, and what they had witnessed on that evening is unlikely to convince them to hand over the organisation of a major sporting event to France for the foreseeable future. The outlet reports that the French FA’s recent crisis, with president Noël Le Graët’s resignation following the conclusions of a government-mandated audit, did France’s bid no favours either. UEFA are said to have closely monitored the situation with astonishment and concern.

Furthermore, the swift dismissal of the French FA’s General Manager Florence Hardouin have reportedly angered UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin, with Hardouin proving a much more popular figure at UEFA’s headquarters in Nyon than in the French FA’s in Paris.
