It feels like Romelu Lukaku has very much reached the bottom of his time at Chelsea, and things can only get better from here.
After playing a long run of games with few goals or even bright performances, the striker was finally dropped for Tuesday night’s game against Lille.
His fate for Sunday’s EFL Cup final now hangs in the balance.
One man who is still backing him to succeed is his captain, Cesar Azpilicueta.
In quotes picked up by the Daily Mirror, Azpi insisted that he still had great faith in the striker to reach his top level at Chelsea. As he pointed out, the Belgian was winning Chelsea trophies just a couple of weeks ago, and is only being judged so harshly by the high standards at the club.
“Yes, I have no doubts that Romelu will show his qualities for the team. He’s having a tough period,” Azpi admitted.
“But we cannot forget also that he scored two goals in the Club World Cup, in the semi-final and the final, so you know high-level players, we go through tough moments but we cannot forget also that he played a big role in the Club World Cup.
“Of course, Romelu is the first one who wants to give more for the team.”
Sunday, will be a huge opportunity for Lukaku to show what he can do, whether or not he starts. Perhaps, now we’ve passed the low point, we will finally start the road to redemption for the former Inter Milan forward.
