Journalist Stuart Hodge has compared former Celtic Chief Executive Officer Dominic McKay to Manchester United's Ed Woodward.

McKay took up his position at Celtic Park over the summer, but he did not last long in the role.

What's the latest news involving McKay?

It is understood that McKay's appointment led to a power struggle at the Glasgow club, with it becoming unclear as to who was fully in charge.

After just 72 days in the job, McKay opted to stand down last month. At the time, a statement said that he had resigned for "personal reasons", but it has since been reported that several figures behind the scenes at Celtic wanted him out as things simply weren't working out.

What has Hodge said about McKay?

Hodge believes that McKay has similarities to United's Woodward, who has been the Premier League club's executive vice-chairman since 2012, but is due to walk away from his role at the end of this year.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT about McKay, Hodge explained that he could hardly be faulted for his work away from the pitch, but that his decisions had failed to translate to success on the field of play.

He said: “What you had is, Celtic basically had two competing schools of thought. So, they bring in Dom McKay, who was the absolute top of his game.

“The way I would describe this to football fans that maybe don’t understand his role, it’s like Ed Woodward at Man United, right? Ed Woodward, when he went in, he transformed Man United as a global brand with India. And when it came to the actual football side of it, he couldn’t do it.”

Is this a fair comparison?

There does appear to be some merit to Hodge's comments. Prior to taking up his position at Celtic, McKay had previously worked behind the scenes with Scotland's rugby union federation, so he clearly knows how to get the most out of sport from a commercial perspective.

The same can be said of Woodward at United, who has a background in accountancy, making him aware of how to handle the finances of a football club.

Who scored Celtic's first goal of the season?

Mohamed Elyounoussi Odsonne Edouard Kristoffer Ajer James Forrest

However, the Red Devils have had a lean spell in terms of winning trophies on the pitch during Woodward's tenure; it has already been over eight years since they last won the Premier League.

Meanwhile, with McKay at Celtic, the Hoops made an indifferent start to the season, and they now find themselves six points adrift of Rangers in the table.

We will never know if McKay could have turned things around as he did not hang around long enough to find out, but he certainly didn't make the impact that would have wanted, and the same could be said of Woodward when he departs United at the end of 2021.
