An early penalty decision saw the hosts take the lead from the penalty spot after a VAR check confirmed Greg Taylor had handled the ball in the area. Mark O’Hara made no mistake a he found the bottom corner from the spot to put St Mirren ahead.

That was the hosts’ only shot of the first half but they largely kept Celtic at bay until the closing stages, when an error from Charles Dunne saw Kyogo Furuhashi head through on goal. Dunne brought the Japanese down and a penalty was awarded, until a VAR review saw the call changed to a free-kick and Dunne sent off for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Pressure with a man advantage told early in the second half, with Jota scrambling the ball over the line after fine work from half-time sub Liel Abada and Aaron Mooy on the right.

It took a matter of minutes for the Scottish champions to complete the comeback, with Alistair Johnston netting his first Celtic goal at the back post following a Mooy free-kick.

Abada made it three with some quick feet and a powerful strike across goal and the travelling fans barely had to wait to celebrate again as Abada assisted was involved again, squaring for Matt O’Riley to finish a fine move from the centre of the box.

A fifth was added in the closing stages as Oh Hyeung-gyu won and converted a penalty to score his first league goal for the club.

The win takes Celtic to 20 games unbeaten in the Scottish Premiership – they have lost just once all season — and keeps them nine points clear of Rangers at the top of the table.
