A remarkable statistic, highlighting the defensive excellence being showcased by Real Madrid across the La Liga season to date, has come to the fore online.

Real, of course, marked their return to action on the domestic front on Saturday evening.

Just days out from the club’s crunch Champions League quarter-final 2nd-leg showdown with Manchester City, Carlo Ancelotti’s troops made the trip to Son Moix, for a meeting with Mallorca.

And, when all was said and done, despite a heavily-rotated XI, Los Blancos emerged on the right side of the result.

A moment of 2nd-half brilliance on the part of Aurélien Tchouaméni proved all that separated the sides come the full-time whistle, guiding Real Madrid another step closer to reclaiming the Spanish top-flight title.

And yet, as alluded to above, the capital giants’ latest win did not only prove significant when it comes to the current campaign.

In addition, it proved a momentous one from a historic standpoint.

As revealed by statistician MisterChip, owing to their latest clean sheet:

‘Real Madrid have equaled their best defensive record after the first 31 games in the ENTIRE history of La Liga. They have only conceded 20 goals, the same as in the 1987-88 campaign.’
