Cantwell gives Rangers insight into mind of Philippe Clement

We sat on Ibrox Noise for a long time on the Todd Cantwell stuff, given what the ex-Rangers playmaker has been saying since he left Ibrox permanent for Ewood Park and a new life and career with John Eustace’s Blackburn Rovers.

This was one we decided to let settle, before offering a comment or two on it.

The big thing we have to say is Cantwell has shown, at last, some maturity in his comments – delivering no criticism per se directly of Philippe Clement, and giving only praise of Rangers and the fans.

This is how players whose careers going sour with clubs should handle it – professionally – unfortunately his social media performances before his exit weren’t the best by a long way.

On his exit, or at least some of it, Cantwell said:

“There was change around the club. When a manager goes, the backroom staff go with him. It felt like a different place. When a new manager comes in they have to put their stamp on things. I think we had a bit of a balance where last season we got ourselves into a position where we could go on to do well. Like I said, I’ve got full respect for the manager and management at Rangers now, but I didn’t believe it was the right place for me to be. Those are personal reasons. You don’t have to look too far behind tactics and the way a team plays and how you get the best version of yourself. I think at 26-year-old if you’re not sure what the best changing room for you to be in is then ultimately you’ll probably bounce around quite a lot. I made the decision, it’s a bold decision and yeah, let’s see how it unfolds.”

In other word, he claims he was happy with Michael Beale, but didn’t like Philippe Clement, even if he has ‘respect’ for the Belgian.

He goes on:

“It was his decision to tell the press that that was my decision. We’d spoken internally for a while before the season had finished. Ultimately we couldn’t find a happy medium for both. The one thing I’m desperate to clear up, which I touched on in my Instagram, is that I never said I didn’t want to play for Rangers Football Club. That never came out of my mouth and never would.”

So, unless all these players are lying about Clement (which they aren’t), the former Brugge manager’s man-management skills are deplorable, and he was happy to dump the Cantwell situation on the player, and take no responsibility for it all.

He did the same with Cantwell in the B team, claiming Cantwell’s absence ‘wasn’t my decision’.

Now, with previous managers acting like this, Rangers fans would be ditching them immediately – Pedro did all this kind of stuff, so did Paul Le Guen.

These days the fans remain stoically behind the boss and everyone else is the bad guy.

But this is a clear statement from Cantwell that he chatted about his position with Clement, they couldn’t come to agreement, and Clement decided to put him in the B team.

It does seem like Clement is a bit of a bare-faced porky teller, that he is about as honest as Beale was, albeit in a different way.

This is not to say Cantwell is whiter-than-white and has never told a fib here, we are sure he has. Regulars will know we criticised him plenty before he left.

But for both him and Ianis Hagi to deny Philippe Clement’s inferring that they refuse/refused to play for any of Rangers’ teams, be it senior or the B side, does indicate that Clement has a bad habit of mismanaging players and misleading about it.

But for the majority, Rangers fans seem these days to want the players sacked along with the board, leaving Philippe Clement/the manager the hero of the hour who can do no wrong.

Ibrox Noise believes Clement is a much bigger problem than many supporters would want to believe.
