Celtic have arrived in Como ahead of their opening fixture in the Como Cup against Ajax at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia tonight (KO: 19.30, live on Celtic TV).
The stadium is backdropped by the stunning Lake Como, one of the most iconic locations in Europe, with the matches being played at the home of Serie A side, Como 1907.
The Hoops, however, will scarcely have time to enjoy the scenery that surrounds them as their gruelling pre-season schedule continues to build towards the season opener against St Mirren in 10 days’ time.
It is, of course, that hard work and commitment from the Bhoys that helps towards the consistent success of the club, and, speaking to Celtic TV ahead of tonight’s match, captain Callum McGregor praised the Celts’ performances in pre-season so far.
He said: “The last couple of games against top-level opponents, the team have been excellent.
“The rhythm, the flow of the game and the aggressive football that we’ve been playing has been really good.
‘The players are feeling good about themselves and we want to continue that over the next couple of games.’
“We want to arrive in to the start of the season in the best shape that we possibly can to be ready for the start of the league campaign.”
Tonight’s match against Ajax provides another opportunity for the champions of Scotland to test themselves against top-level opposition.
The Bhoys have already defeated Sporting Lisbon and Newcastle over the past few weeks, both of whom will be in the UCL next season.
And in Callum McGregor’s opinion, coming up against opposition of that calibre is the perfect preparation for the campaign ahead.
He added: “This is what being at Celtic is all about, playing against the best teams.
“Ajax have a massive history and you know that you’re playing against a big opponent.
‘We strive to be in the Champions League, so we want these types of fixtures and to play against these teams.’
“It’s a really good test early on for us and another step forward over the last couple of games.
“It’s really exciting and it’s a test that the players relish because we want to test ourselves as much as we can."
