Borussia Dortmund's women's football team cruised to a 5-0 (1-0) win away to SC Union Bochum-Bergen. Marie Grothe scored a brace to become BVB's new record goalscorer.
Borussia Dortmund continues its unstoppable march towards the Women's Westfalenliga. On Matchday 17, they notched up their fifth 5-0 win of the season away to SC Union Bochum-Bergen. Even being outnumbered for an hour could not stop the league leaders.
Coach Thomas Sulewski was forced to make two changes to the starting XI compared to the home win against Heeren because of holidays. Virginia Glänzer and Vanessa Kuhl replaced Hannah Geldschläger and Merle Greulich. A piece of link-up play between the two almost gave BVB the lead. After a corner from Kuhl and a header from Glänzer, only the woodwork could deny Dortmund from taking a 1-0 lead. In the 30th minute, the Black & Yellows found themselves a player down following Marah Tayeh's red card.
Despite having one player less on the pitch, Borussia remained the dominant team. A long-range shot from Marie Grothe in the 37th minute brushed just wide of the post. However, Grothe then opened the scoring in stoppage time of the first half. Her fine through pass found Marjana Naceva, who rounded the keeper and slotted home (45+1).
"We adjusted our tactics during the break and switched to a 4-4-1 system. The girls then played extremely well and scored some wonderful goals," praised Sulewski. The second goal was one to remember: following a corner, a second ball landed at the feet of Lisa Gomulka, who hammered it into the back of the net from around 25 metres out (48). Although they were one player up, it was Bochum who were forced to try to disrupt the Black & Yellows, who time and time again were able to play their way out of trouble. A brilliant piece of attacking play on the right wing was capped off by a Grothe finish in the area to make it 3-0 (59). Grothe completed her brace in the 67th minute when she headed a Kuhl corner into the right-hand corner of the net. It was the midfielder's 14th goal of the season and her 56th competitive goal in a BVB shirt. This makes her Borussia Dortmund's new record goalscorer.
Sandra Schröer extended another magical milestone in the 70th minute: Dortmund had gone 992 minutes without conceding a goal in the league as Bergen striker Angelina Brück bore down on goal, but Schröer came out on top in the one-on-one. A short time later, the 1,000-minute mark was reached. Down the other end, Ana Louisa Haslsteiner took advantage of a positioning error by the Bochum goalkeeper to extend the lead to 5-0. "It was a tough battle. The two opposing forwards really challenged us, but we pulled through with confidence in the second half," said goalscorer Haslsteiner.
Points dropped by BVB's nearest competitors, Dröschede (a 2-1 loss to Freudenberg) and Brechten (a 2-2 draw in Hohenlimburg) means the Black & Yellows now have a 14-point lead at the top of the table with one more game played. The BVB women have the weekend off and can prepare for the Westfalenpokal semi-final away to Arminia Bielefeld on 1 April. Kick-off on Easter Monday in the EDIMEDIEN-ARENA is scheduled for 15:00 CET.
